In Denmark marriage with a Ukrainian with Temporary Protection (§24 AufenthG)

Since 2022, Ukrainian citizens have received temporary protection in Germany under §24 AufenthG and in other EU countries as war refugees. Many of them wish to formalize their relationships, and Denmark offers the fastest, simplest, and most legal way to register a marriage for foreign nationals under temporary protection.

What are the main rights of Ukrainians under §24 AufenthG?

According to §24 of the German Residence Act (AufenthG), Ukrainian citizens are granted temporary protection under EU Directive 2001/55/EC. This means:

  • legal residence in Germany with the possibility of extension
  • access to the labor market, education, medical and social assistance
  • residence permit in the form of:
    – a plastic card
    – a passport sticker
    – a temporary document (Fiktionsbescheinigung)

Is it possible to get married in Denmark under §24?

Ukrainian refugees residing in Germany under §24 have the right to get married in Denmark. A marriage registered in Denmark is officially recognized in Germany, other EU countries, and generally worldwide—provided all legal requirements are met and correct documents are submitted.

Why do many choose Denmark?

  • Fastest registration process — couples can marry in the shortest time possible.
  • Minimal bureaucracy.
  • International marriage certificate issued in 5 languages.
  • No requirement for long-term registration or permanent residence in Denmark.

Which couples can get married?

  1. Both partners are Ukrainians under §24
✅ Marriage is allowed. Both must provide proof of their temporary protection status in Germany.
  2. One partner is Ukrainian under §24, the other is a German citizen
✅ Marriage is allowed. After the wedding, the Ukrainian partner can apply to change their residence status — for example, for family reunification.
  3. One partner is Ukrainian under §24, the other is from a non-EU country
✅ Marriage is allowed if the second partner has legal residence in the EU (temporary permit, visa, etc.).
  4. One partner is Ukrainian under §24, the other is an EU citizen (Poland, Lithuania, Spain, etc.)
✅ Marriage is allowed. EU citizens can legally marry in any EU country, including Denmark. Only a valid passport or ID and confirmation of marital status (if required) are needed.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

  1. Document preparation and submission

The first step is collecting and preparing a complete set of documents according to Danish agency requirements. You can apply independently or via an official representative — for example, through our agency that specializes in international marriages.
  2. Application review by the Danish Agency

After submission, documents are reviewed by the Agency of Family Law. Standard processing time is 5–10 business days if all requirements are met.
  3. Choosing the ceremony location and date

Once approved, you can choose a city and wedding date. Popular options include: Copenhagen, Odense, Tønder, Ærø, Ribe, and more. We help you select a convenient location and confirm the schedule.
  4. Marriage ceremony

The ceremony is held in a cozy Danish town hall. It can be conducted in English or Danish. A translator and special additions (decor, photographer, etc.) are available on request.
  5. Receiving the international marriage certificate

After the ceremony, you will receive an official certificate of marriage issued in five languages: Danish, English, German, French, and Spanish.
